Accurate measuring and complex planning for flooring projects
Eben explains that his typical day involves visiting job sites to measure flooring projects. Accurate measurements are especially critical for carpeting, where incorrect measurements can result in unusable material.
Before using magicplan, Eben measured rooms using a tape measure and recorded notes by hand. He then returned to the office to redraw plans in order to prepare quotes. This process was time-consuming, prone to error, and created the risk of lost or unreadable measurements. If measurements were lost, Eben had to return to the site to remeasure.
Carpet installations also require detailed cutting plans. Because KBAC Flooring works on high-end projects, carpet joints must be carefully planned to ensure seamless finishes, particularly in hospitality environments.
“You have to have very accurate measurements, because if you are wrong, you don’t lose a little bit – you lose a whole sheet that’s not going to work.”
Solution
Using magicplan to measure, plan, and quote flooring projects
Eben uses magicplan on site to scan rooms and create accurate floor plans. He works with a Bluetooth laser connected to his iPad to capture precise measurements. After leaving the site, he returns to the office and uses the floor plan to begin the planning and quoting process.
Because the floor plan is already complete, nothing needs to be redrawn. magicplan calculates square meterage for vinyl, carpet tiles, and wood flooring, along with notes and required trims, allowing Eben to quote efficiently.
For carpet installations, magicplan is used to create cutting plans. Eben explains that the app works like “Tetris” to optimize carpet layouts and produce accurate cutting designs. These plans are shared with clients to show where carpet joints will be placed and with installers so they know exactly how and where to cut on site.
Digital cutting plans allow Eben to work remotely during installations while maintaining clear communication with installers.
“That’s why we like using magicplan to plan carpet installations.”
Results
Faster quoting, better coordination, and repeat client support
Since using magicplan for carpet calculations, Eben explains that he has never been short of material on a site. Digital plans allow him to work remotely and support installers without being present on site throughout the installation.
KBAC Flooring works with repeat clients, particularly in the hospitality sector. magicplan allows Eben to access previous floor plans from the cloud, eliminating the need to revisit sites to remeasure. In some cases, he can create cutting plans and send quotes within minutes.
Scanning an entire house typically takes around ten minutes, and Eben is rarely on site for more than half an hour. Scanning a large hotel with multiple floors can take two to three hours, using duplication functions to speed up the process for similar rooms.
Clients react positively when they see magicplan used on site. Eben notes that scanning rooms digitally creates a strong professional impression compared to traditional measuring methods.
Outlook
A core tool for flooring projects and client relationships
Currently, four employees at KBAC Flooring actively use magicplan. Eben explains that having floor plans stored in the cloud allows him to respond quickly to client requests, particularly in time-sensitive hospitality environments.
When asked how he discovered magicplan, Eben describes finding it after testing multiple drawing apps that were too slow for on-site use. He explains that magicplan immediately stood out for its speed, ease of use, and professional presentation.
When asked to describe magicplan in one word, Eben reflects on how it has changed his way of working.
